Springfield, Ill. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to fire up across central Illinois this evening, with the most dangerous window between 5 and 9 p.m. Areas along and south of I-72—including Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign—face isolated tornado potential and damaging wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a disturbance is moving northeast across the region, setting the stage for scattered but intense storms. The greatest hazards include low-end tornado development and localized wind damage. While not all areas will see severe weather, storms that do develop could quickly turn dangerous.
Cities including Jacksonville, Taylorville, and Mattoon are advised to remain weather-aware. Residents should charge devices, secure loose outdoor items, and be prepared to shelter indoors if warnings are issued. Travel may become hazardous if storms develop suddenly, especially on rural roads with limited visibility.
This evening’s threat could shift quickly, and additional warnings may be issued with little lead time. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts as the situation evolves.
