Springfield, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt by mid-afternoon Monday, with a significant risk for tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail threatening travel and power infrastructure across central Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, an enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) is in place, with greater than a 45% chance of severe storms developing between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday. All hazards are possible, including wind gusts near 70 mph, hail exceeding 2 inches in diameter, and several tornadoes.

Communities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur, and Champaign sit within the highest-risk zone. Major corridors such as Interstate 55, Interstate 72, and Interstate 74 could see rapid deterioration in conditions, with debris, heavy rain, and low visibility leading to dangerous driving or temporary closures. Power outages may become widespread if storms organize into lines during the evening hours.

Residents should finalize severe weather plans now, ensure phones and weather radios are charged, and identify a safe shelter location away from windows. Avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm timing, especially late afternoon into evening.

The severe threat will continue into Monday night as storms push east. Additional watches and warnings are likely as conditions evolve throughout the day.
