Springfield, Illinois – Comfortable summer weather won’t last much longer across Central Illinois as a surge of heat and humidity returns Sunday, bringing dangerous afternoon heat index values that could reach 100 to 110 degrees through Tuesday, with the most intense conditions expected Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, pleasant temperatures continue Friday with highs ranging from 77 to 81 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. A warming trend begins over the weekend, and scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible after midnight Friday into early Saturday, although rainfall is not expected to be widespread.

By Sunday, afternoon highs climb into the upper 80s to lower 90s, with heat index values reaching 98 to 107 degrees across much of Central Illinois. The hottest weather arrives Monday, when highs reach 92 to 94 degrees and the heat index climbs to 100 to 110 degrees. Tuesday remains hot, with highs between 91 and 94 degrees and heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees. While isolated thunderstorms are possible early next week, current indications suggest the better rain chances remain farther north.

Communities including Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign, Lincoln, Jacksonville and Taylorville should plan for dangerous afternoon heat. Stay hydrated before becoming thirsty, spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

The National Weather Service expects the heat to ease slightly by the middle of next week, but additional Heat Advisories or Extreme Heat Warnings may be issued if confidence increases in prolonged dangerous conditions.
