Champaign, IL – Residents of central Illinois should prepare for rapidly changing weather as freezing fog tonight gives way to rain, snow, and bitter cold over the weekend. A mix of rain and snow is expected to arrive late Friday, creating potentially hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing fog could develop overnight Thursday, making roads slick and reducing visibility. By Friday evening, a system will bring rain to much of the region, which could change to snow as temperatures plummet. Accumulation will remain light for most areas but could make driving hazardous, especially along I-70.
Saturday will see temperatures fall to the teens, with strong northwest winds making it feel even colder. By Sunday, wind chills could drop below zero, and daytime highs will struggle to reach the single digits. Nighttime temperatures could fall as low as -5 degrees, prompting frostbite concerns for anyone outside for extended periods.
Residents are urged to prepare for dangerous conditions by securing outdoor items, checking heating systems, and limiting time outdoors during extreme cold. Drivers should keep an emergency kit in their vehicles and stay updated on road conditions.
The cold pattern is expected to persist through early next week, with Monday’s high forecasted at only 7 degrees. Stay alert for weather updates and plan accordingly.
