Springfield, Illinois – Drivers across central Illinois could encounter isolated wet roads early Sunday before warmer and mainly dry conditions settle in for Memorial Day, followed by a renewed stretch of thunderstorms through the middle of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, a few spotty showers are expected Sunday morning before dry weather develops through the afternoon and evening as temperatures climb toward 80 degrees. Forecasters say additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms will return periodically beginning Tuesday and continue through at least Thursday night.
Communities including Springfield, Peoria, Decatur and Champaign are expected to stay mostly dry Monday with highs reaching between 79 and 86 degrees under partly sunny skies. Travel conditions along Interstate 55, I-72 and I-74 should remain favorable through Memorial Day, though patchy showers may briefly affect a few areas early Sunday.
Storm chances increase Tuesday, especially south of Interstate 72, where forecasters indicate the best potential for rainfall development. Rain coverage becomes more widespread Wednesday with storm probabilities climbing near 70%, raising the possibility of locally heavy downpours and occasional lightning during the afternoon and evening hours.
Residents planning outdoor work, travel or holiday events later this week are encouraged to monitor changing weather conditions closely as repeated thunderstorm rounds could create isolated ponding on roads. Additional advisories may be issued if stronger storms develop across central Illinois.
