Springfield, IL – A heat advisory is in effect through Monday across central and southeast Illinois, with heat index values of 100 to 110 degrees expected both afternoons. Nighttime temperatures will only drop to the 75-80 degree range.

According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, the advisory might extend into Tuesday, especially south of I-72, depending on the track of thunderstorms north of the area Monday night. Residents are advised to wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and try to schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late evening.

Additionally, clusters of thunderstorms are forecasted to move southeast from the Upper Midwest tonight and Monday night, potentially impacting northern central Illinois with damaging wind gusts and isolated hail. The most significant storm risk periods are tonight from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. and Monday night from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The hot and humid air will dominate through Monday, continuing south of I-70 on Tuesday. Thunderstorm complexes around the heat dome will bring periodic storm chances, with the highest coverage expected on Tuesday when a cold front moves through.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, use air conditioning, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours. The heatwave and potential storms pose significant health and safety risks, requiring caution and preparedness. For ongoing updates, visit weather.gov/lincoln.
