Springfield, Illinois – Showers are spreading across Central Illinois this afternoon, especially near and south of I-72, including the Danville area, with isolated thunderstorms expected north of I-74 later tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the heaviest rain through tonight will focus on southeast Illinois. While Friday looks drier overall, a few gusty storms remain possible, particularly north of the I-74 corridor. Canadian wildfire smoke is forecast to arrive Friday aloft, possibly dipping to ground level and affecting air quality for those with respiratory sensitivities.

Temperatures will climb steadily through the weekend, with highs reaching the mid-80s by Sunday. Drivers may encounter slick spots during passing showers this evening, and residents with asthma or COPD should limit outdoor activity if smoke becomes noticeable.

Communities from Champaign to Effingham should monitor air quality updates and limit strenuous activity outdoors as needed. The brief storm window Thursday night may also bring wind gusts up to 30 mph.

Warm and sunny weather will dominate Saturday and Sunday, but the NWS advises continued awareness of lingering smoke. Additional air quality advisories could be issued through the weekend.
