Champaign, IL – A dramatic spring weather shift is underway in central Illinois, with freezing temperatures giving way to midweek thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, across central, east central, and west central Illinois. Early Tuesday lows dropped to 26°F, threatening sensitive vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents in areas including Springfield, Champaign, Decatur, and Urbana were urged to take immediate steps to protect plants and exposed pipes.

By Wednesday, April 9, the region shifts from freeze risks to wet weather, with an 80% chance of showers during the day. Temperatures will climb to a high of 56°F, but gusts up to 30 mph could complicate travel along I-72 and rural roads.

While no severe storms are expected, isolated heavier downpours could reduce visibility and slow commutes. Wind chills Tuesday morning dipped as low as 22°F, adding another layer of discomfort before conditions begin warming midweek.
