Springfield, Ill. – Drivers across central Illinois are facing hazardous travel conditions this morning as patchy dense fog lowers visibility to less than a quarter-mile in spots.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, areas along and south of I-72 — including Springfield, Litchfield, Effingham, and portions of I-55 — are experiencing reduced visibility due to fog. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by mid-morning, but commuters are urged to use caution during early travel hours.
Visibility is especially limited in regions near Quincy, Jacksonville, and Vandalia, where roadways like I-72 and I-70 are seeing the greatest impacts. The fog poses a risk for sudden visibility drops, especially on rural roads and low-lying areas. The NWS advises drivers to use low-beam headlights, slow down, and maintain extra following distance to avoid collisions.
This is the first significant fog event of June across the region, a reminder that humid early summer mornings can still bring visibility hazards even outside of winter months.
Conditions should steadily improve after 9 a.m., but drivers are encouraged to check local traffic reports and allow extra travel time. More advisories may be issued if visibility worsens.
