Peachtree City, Georgia – Snowfall continues to impact central and west-central Georgia Sunday morning, as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the warning is in effect until 1 p.m. EST Sunday and covers a broad portion of central and west-central Georgia.
Forecasters expect snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, an unusually impactful amount for the region. While totals may appear modest, the National Weather Service warns that slippery and hazardous road conditions are likely, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways.
Counties under the warning include Bibb, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Macon, Peach, Houston, Bleckley, Laurens, Sumter, Dooly, Crisp, Pulaski, Wilcox, Dodge, Marion, Schley, Stewart, and Webster. Impacted communities include Macon, Warner Robins, Dublin, Americus, Cordele, Fort Valley, Hawkinsville, Cochran, Vienna, and Montezuma.
Snowfall is expected to continue through the late morning hours before tapering off early this afternoon. Even after snow ends, road conditions may remain slick, especially in shaded areas where melting is limited.
The National Weather Service advises that travel should be avoided if possible until conditions improve. Drivers who must be on the road are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.
Georgia Department of Transportation officials recommend checking road conditions by dialing 511 before traveling. While temperatures may rise slightly later today, lingering impacts are possible well into the afternoon.
