Snowshoe, WV – Snow showers and gusty winds are creating hazardous conditions across the higher elevations of the Central Appalachians today, as multiple Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for parts of West Virginia and western Virginia. The National Weather Service says travel impacts may occur throughout the day, especially during the Friday morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, up to 5 inches of snow are possible in Northwest Pocahontas, Southeast Randolph and Southeast Webster counties. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph, producing wind chills as low as -5 degrees. The advisory runs until 5 p.m. Friday, and blowing snow may reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less.
Farther south, the National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports 1 to 3 inches of snow for Western Greenbrier County, including Rainelle, Quinwood and Duo. This advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Friday, with gusts up to 40 mph. The snow and strong winds will create slick conditions on untreated surfaces, especially before midday.
The combination of snow, ice and blowing snow could disrupt holiday travel across the region and make mountain routes particularly treacherous. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and be alert for icy patches on stairs, sidewalks and driveways.
Road condition updates are available by dialing 511 for your state. The National Weather Service provides additional forecast information at weather.gov/rlx and weather.gov/rnk.
