Springfield, IL – A potent storm system is forecast to move across central and southeast Illinois on Sunday, bringing the threat of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, scattered strong storms are expected to develop late Sunday morning, with the most significant threat occurring between noon and 9 p.m. The highest risk areas include Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, Mattoon, and Effingham, all situated in the “Enhanced Risk” zone outlined by the Storm Prediction Center.

Winds could exceed 75 mph, and hail may reach severe levels in size. The forecast also warns of a few tornadoes, particularly in the southeast quadrant of the state. A cold front moving through will drive these conditions, followed by cooler and drier weather on Monday.

Residents are urged to remain weather-aware, especially during afternoon and evening hours. Prepare now by reviewing shelter plans, charging devices, and monitoring local alerts. If warnings are issued, take cover immediately.

This system marks a sharp contrast to the mild and above-average temperatures earlier in the weekend, with highs Sunday ranging from 70–75°F before the front moves through. The next update is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.
