Glennallen, Alaska – Drivers along the Tok Cutoff could see visibility drop to a half mile or less by midafternoon Monday as steady snow intensifies and road conditions deteriorate through 4 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, snow will develop early Monday afternoon across the Central Copper Valley before strengthening through the day. Totals of 3 to 7 inches are expected around Glennallen, Gakona and Copper Center, while 6 to 13 inches could pile up along the Tok Cutoff from Chistochina to Slana.

The heaviest snowfall is expected Monday afternoon through Monday night, particularly between Chistochina and Slana. Snow will gradually taper during the day Tuesday, but conditions will remain hazardous. Gusty northwest to northeast winds are forecast to develop, lifting freshly fallen snow and reducing visibility along exposed stretches of the highway.

Travel along the Tok Cutoff may become very difficult, especially during periods of heavier snow and blowing drifts. Motorists should slow down, allow extra distance between vehicles and prepare for rapidly changing visibility.

The Winter Weather Advisory runs from noon Monday until 4 p.m. Tuesday. Officials urge drivers to check 511.alaska.gov for the latest road updates, as blowing snow may persist into Tuesday night even after steady snowfall ends.
