Birmingham, AL – Rain and thunderstorms are expected to move into central Alabama later this afternoon, with impacts likely during the evening commute as wet roads and reduced visibility develop.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, rain chances will increase west of I-65 after 3 to 4 p.m., spreading east through the evening hours. Cities including Tuscaloosa, Jasper, and Hamilton will see the first showers, followed by Birmingham, Clanton, and Anniston later in the evening.
High temperatures will reach the low to mid-80s today, adding enough warmth for scattered thunderstorms to develop. While severe weather is not the primary concern, a few storms could produce brief heavy downpours and gusty winds up to 20 mph.
Major routes such as I-20, I-59, and I-65 may see slick conditions during peak travel hours, especially where heavier rain develops. Ponding water on roads could slow traffic in low-lying and urban areas.
Rain chances continue into tonight with lows falling into the upper 50s to low 60s. Drivers should allow extra time, use headlights in rain, and avoid flooded roadways. Additional updates are expected if storm coverage increases this evening.
