Abilene, TX – A surge of early-season heat is building across West Central Texas, with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 90s through the weekend, increasing risks for heat-related illness and outdoor strain.
According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, highs will reach 93 to 97 degrees from Saturday through Monday across cities including Abilene, San Angelo, Brownwood, and Sweetwater. Overnight lows will only drop into the mid to upper 60s, offering limited relief and allowing heat to build day after day.
Dry conditions will dominate through the weekend, with little to no rainfall expected. This will keep soils dry and increase stress on vegetation, while also elevating fire concerns in open areas. Major routes like I-20 and U.S. 87 may see heat-related vehicle strain during peak afternoon hours.
Rain chances return by midweek, with a 20 to 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms developing by Wednesday and Thursday. While this could bring some relief, it may also introduce brief travel disruptions if storms develop over roadways.
Residents should limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, stay hydrated, and check cooling systems. The heat will persist through Monday, with updates expected as rain chances approach midweek.
