Wichita, KS – Quiet and dry conditions today will give way to a more active and potentially disruptive pattern by late Saturday, when thunderstorms could begin impacting travel and outdoor plans across south-central Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storm chances increase after 6 p.m. Saturday, with scattered thunderstorms developing across the region. Some of these storms may become severe, continuing into Sunday with additional rounds possible.
The highest impacts are expected across Wichita, Hutchinson, El Dorado, and Winfield, especially along major corridors like I-35 and I-135. High temperatures in the mid to upper 70s will provide enough instability for storms to strengthen, with large hail and wind gusts near 60 mph the primary concerns.
Storm coverage may expand Sunday afternoon and evening, raising the risk for repeated rainfall over the same areas. While widespread flooding is not guaranteed, localized heavy rain could lead to ponding on roads and slower travel, particularly during evening hours.
Residents should use Friday’s dry weather to prepare, secure outdoor items, and stay alert for warnings this weekend. Storm chances continue into Sunday night, and additional updates are expected as timing and severity become clearer.
