Newport, NC – Summer-like heat is building across eastern North Carolina today, but increasing storm chances this weekend could disrupt travel, especially along coastal routes and beach destinations.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, highs will reach 88 to 90 degrees Friday across inland areas including Greenville, Kinston, and New Bern, with slightly cooler readings along the Outer Banks. Most locations stay dry today, though isolated showers may develop near the Albemarle Sound late this afternoon into the evening.

Conditions begin to shift Saturday afternoon, with a better chance for showers and thunderstorms developing and expanding Saturday night into Sunday. The greatest impacts are expected along U.S. 70, U.S. 17, and coastal highways where heavier downpours could create slick roads and reduced visibility.

Beachgoers heading to Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and the Outer Banks should prepare for changing conditions, including brief heavy rain and lightning. While widespread severe weather is not currently indicated, localized heavy rainfall could lead to ponding on roads and minor travel delays.
