Cass County, IN – Pedestrian Struck on US 24, Critical Injuries Reported

Cass County, IN – A pedestrian was struck by a minivan in Cass County, Indiana, on Wednesday evening, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 7:37 PM on April 16, 2025, east of County Road 1100 West on US 24. Emergency responders, including deputies, fire departments, and medical services from surrounding areas, rushed to the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that 83-year-old Marcia Smith, a resident of Lake Cicott, IN, was walking westbound on US 24 when she attempted to cross the road. She was struck by a Chrysler Town & Country minivan, driven by 80-year-old Thomas Murray of Monticello, IN, heading westbound.

Smith suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Parkview Medical Center in Fort Wayne for treatment. The driver, Murray, was unharmed and declined medical assistance at the scene. Authorities confirmed that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash.

US 24 was closed for about two and a half hours while investigators worked on the scene. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.
