Galveston, IN – Fire crews in Cass County battled a destructive garage fire early Monday morning that spread to a nearby home and car, according to officials.

The Galveston Volunteer Fire Department reported the fire began around 1:58 a.m. on September 29 at 115 Winn Street in Galveston. Crews from Young America and Walton Fire Departments also responded under automatic aid.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Garrett Evans, firefighters arrived to find a heavily involved garage fire that had already burned through the roof and spread to a vehicle in the driveway. Two hose lines were used in a defensive attack, while another was deployed inside to slow the blaze. Crews also worked on the roof to improve smoke conditions.

While firefighters gained control of the structure, officials said a new hazard emerged when the car in the driveway began leaking fuel, causing gas to flare up. Firefighters applied Class B foam to suppress the leak and prevent ignition. Both the garage and car were fully extinguished without injury.

Agencies assisting in the response included the Cass County EMA, Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Cass County Dispatch, and multiple volunteer fire departments.

Residents reported heavy smoke in the area early Monday but no evacuations were required. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
