Cass County, IN – Two 18-year-olds were seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash on a rural Cass County roadway, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 1:33 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a crash south of County Road 525 North on County Road 400 East. Multiple agencies responded, including Indiana State Police, Logansport Fire Department, Cass County EMS, and several township fire departments.

Investigators said a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling northbound on County Road 400 East when it left the east side of the roadway. The vehicle struck an earthen embankment and several small trees before colliding with a large tree. The car came to rest off the roadway, facing southbound near the edge of a pond.

Authorities identified the driver as Breidon Vanderwall, 18, of Rochester, Indiana. The passenger was identified as Kayden Diaz, 18, of rural Logansport.

Fire crews were required to extricate both occupants from the vehicle. After being freed, the driver and passenger were flown in separate medical helicopters to Parkview Regional Health in Fort Wayne for treatment. Officials said both sustained serious injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which investigators say contributed to the severity of the injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.
