Carol Stream, IL – A Carol Stream man remains in custody after allegedly setting fire to his home early Saturday morning, triggering a massive explosion that damaged nearby residences and endangered lives.

According to DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and Carol Stream Police Chief Don Cummings, 52-year-old Eric Neuman was denied pre-trial release after appearing in court Saturday. Neuman faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of aggravated arson, one count of arson, and one count of criminal damage to property.

Carol Stream police responded to the 700 block of Hemlock Lane around 4:28 a.m. on Saturday, where a home — previously occupied by Neuman and his ex-wife — was fully engulfed in flames. Authorities allege Neuman poured approximately 40 gallons of gasoline throughout the home, placed propane tanks in the garage, and then ignited the blaze with a flare before fleeing the scene.

According to officials, Neuman had sent threatening messages to his ex-wife on August 2, stating his intention to flood the home with gasoline, tamper with gas lines, and remove flow restrictors. Troopers with Illinois State Police apprehended Neuman around 10:35 a.m. Saturday after a pursuit near the Bloomington/Morton area.

Officials say neighbors, including children, were home during the explosion, though no injuries were reported. “This type of extremely dangerous behavior will not be tolerated,” Berlin said, commending first responders and investigators for preventing further harm.

Neuman’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 22, 2025, in front of Judge Brian Telander. He remains presumed innocent pending trial.
