Caribou, Maine – Dangerous Arctic cold is gripping northern Maine tonight, with life-threatening wind chills expected before snow creates travel hazards early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, wind chills will drop to −20°F to −40°F overnight and persist through Saturday morning, creating a high risk of frostbite on exposed skin within minutes. Daytime temperatures Saturday are expected to remain near zero or below, even with sunshine.

Forecasters say another frigid night is likely Saturday night, with low temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees below zero across much of northern Maine. Clouds will increase Sunday, but very cold conditions will continue.

Snow is expected to develop in the Bangor region Sunday evening and spread north overnight, reaching Caribou and Presque Isle around or shortly after daybreak Monday. While snowfall totals are still being refined, hazardous travel is likely.

The Monday morning commute is expected to be impacted, especially along Interstate 95 from Houlton to Bangor, where slick roads and reduced visibility may develop.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and plan ahead for deteriorating travel conditions early Monday.
