A powerful winter storm is impacting the Sierra Nevada, bringing heavy snow, intense winds, and hazardous travel conditions through noon Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, snowfall totals could reach up to 18 inches at the highest elevations, with gusty winds up to 110 mph along mountain ridges. Lake Tahoe is experiencing waves between 2 to 4 feet, creating additional hazards.

The storm is affecting multiple regions, including Mono County, Lassen County, and the Eastern Sierra, with snow accumulations ranging from 2 to 12 inches at lower elevations and up to 2 feet in higher terrain. Wind gusts up to 80 mph are expected in Lassen and Plumas counties, further complicating travel.

Drivers should expect treacherous road conditions, with potential closures and whiteout conditions. The worst travel conditions are anticipated Thursday evening through Friday morning. Those traveling through the Sierra Nevada should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.

Officials urge caution, as falling trees and power outages are likely due to high winds. Travelers can check real-time road conditions by dialing 511.
