Sacramento, CA – Northern California residents are bracing for heavy snowfall in the Sierra Nevada starting Friday evening, with hazardous conditions likely through Tuesday. Snow levels are expected to drop to 4,500 feet over the weekend, causing significant travel delays and visibility issues.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will bring 1 to 4 feet of snow to mountain areas, with the heaviest accumulation expected Friday night and Sunday through Tuesday. Gusts of up to 50 mph may further reduce visibility, making travel along I-80 and Highway 50 particularly dangerous. Chain controls are anticipated, and authorities strongly discourage non-essential travel to affected areas.

Those planning mountain trips this weekend are advised to check Caltrans’ QuickMap for updated road conditions and carry chains if travel is unavoidable. Motorists should also be prepared for delays, icy roads, and rapidly changing conditions.

Rain is expected in the Sacramento Valley, with highs near 58 degrees Friday and 56 degrees on Saturday, accompanied by showers. Overnight lows will hover around 45 to 50 degrees. Showers are likely to continue into Sunday and Monday.

Further into next week, conditions may improve as snowfall in the mountains tapers off by Tuesday evening. However, snow-covered roads and lingering ice will still pose challenges for drivers.

Residents are urged to monitor updates from NWS and local officials to stay safe during this weather event.
