Morristown, TN – Residents across eastern Tennessee and southwest Virginia are preparing for winter weather as snow and strong winds are expected through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday for areas including Johnson City, Mountain City, Kingsport, and Greeneville. Snowfall accumulations between 1 and 3 inches are forecasted, with isolated amounts of up to 6 inches on higher ridges. Gusts of up to 40 mph are also expected to create hazardous travel conditions.
Meanwhile, higher elevations in areas like the Smoky Mountains could see totals exceeding 8 inches. NWS Greenville-Spartanburg has also issued advisories for western North Carolina counties, including Avery, Madison, and Yancey, where gusts up to 50 mph and snow totals of 4 to 8 inches could cause scattered power outages.
The advisory warns of slippery roads, reduced visibility, and downed tree branches, particularly during Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Officials urge drivers to reduce speeds and remain cautious, particularly on mountain roads.
The region is expected to see improving conditions by Saturday as temperatures stabilize and the snow diminishes.
