Las Vegas, Nevada – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for high elevations of eastern California through 4 p.m. PST Friday, as multiple rounds of heavy snow and gusty winds continue to impact the Eastern Sierra and White Mountains, according to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas.

The warning covers the White Mountains of Inyo County and the Eastern Sierra Slopes, including Westgard Pass, Bristlecone Pine, Aspendell, and Whitney Portal. Travel along Highway 168, particularly through Westgard Pass, is expected to become difficult to impossible at times as snow levels lower later this week.

Forecasters report that total snow accumulations will be substantial. In the White Mountains, snowfall is expected to exceed two feet above 8,000 feet, with 8 to 16 inches above 7,000 feet and 3 to 6 inches above 6,000 feet. Along the Eastern Sierra Slopes, accumulations may exceed three feet above 9,000 feet, with 1 to 2 feet above 8,000 feet and 6 to 10 inches above 6,000 feet.

Winds are expected to gust between 50 and 55 mph at times, increasing the risk of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility. According to the National Weather Service, several periods of heavy precipitation are likely between now and Friday, with conditions worsening as snow levels fall from above 8,000 feet today and Wednesday to around 6,000 feet by Thursday and Friday.

Hazardous travel conditions are expected throughout the warning period, especially on mountain highways and passes. Strong winds may also cause isolated tree damage in exposed areas.

Officials urge travelers to delay non-essential trips and prepare for rapidly changing mountain weather. Those who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies and check road conditions by calling 1-800-427-7623 before departure. Holiday travelers through the Eastern Sierra should plan for significant delays through Friday afternoon.
