Sacramento, CA – Northern California is under a Winter Storm Watch as a severe storm approaches the Sierra Nevada.

The National Weather Service has warned of heavy snowfall beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing through Wednesday evening. Accumulations could reach up to three feet at higher elevations above 4500 feet. Areas above 3500 feet may see 4 to 8 inches of snow, while peaks could exceed two feet. Gusty winds up to 50 mph may cause additional hazards, including fallen tree branches and poor visibility.

Travelers should expect difficult conditions, with slick roads and chain controls likely on mountain passes. According to Caltrans, commutes on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning may be severely disrupted. Snow levels will initially range from 3000 to 4000 feet but rise to 4500 to 5500 feet by Wednesday afternoon.

Residents are advised to prepare for possible power outages and delays. Drivers should check road conditions online or call 511 before traveling.

The storm is part of an active weather system impacting the region, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for winter travel.
