Bakersfield, California – Drivers crossing the Mojave Desert Slopes in Kern County could face dangerous travel conditions through 11 p.m. Friday, as strong winds threaten to down tree limbs and scatter debris across major routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a wind advisory remains in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday to 11 p.m. Friday, with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts peaking near 50 mph. Impacted areas include Tehachapi, Mojave, and Grapevine, as well as key highways like California State Routes 14, 58, and 178, and U.S. Route 395.

High-profile vehicles are especially at risk of tipping in these conditions. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel through mountain passes and desert slopes. Loose outdoor items should be secured, and residents are advised to prepare for potential power outages due to falling limbs.

This advisory follows similar spring wind events that have disrupted travel along the Sierra Nevada and desert corridors. Winds are expected to ease late Friday night, but additional alerts could be issued if conditions worsen.
