Mono County, CA – A strong Sierra storm is set to hit the region today, bringing heavy wet snow and dangerous winds to high elevations through Friday afternoon. Travelers, backcountry hikers, and residents near Mammoth Lakes, Bridgeport, Coleville, and Lee Vining should prepare for deteriorating conditions beginning this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday to 4 p.m. Friday for areas above 9,000 feet. Forecasters expect 9 to 12 inches of snow above that elevation, with lower elevations just below 9,000 feet picking up up to 4 inches. The highest peaks, especially near Mt. Lyell, may see more than 2 feet of snow.

The storm is also expected to bring significant winds. According to NWS meteorologists, gusts could reach 70 mph along the highest ridges and 40 to 50 mph below 8,000 feet. These conditions may lead to falling tree limbs, power line damage, whiteout visibility, and hazardous travel.

NWS officials warn that the storm could affect both the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes, especially for those traveling mountain passes or accessing backcountry terrain. Drivers are urged to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including food, water, and a flashlight. Road condition updates are available by dialing 511.

Residents in Mono County and the Eastern Sierra region should monitor updated forecasts throughout the day as conditions may worsen quickly.
