Monterey, CA – A low-pressure system moving into Northern California is expected to bring thunderstorms across the San Francisco Bay Area’s coastal waters and bays starting Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Bay Area.

The NWS reports that hazards include lightning, heavy rain, reduced visibility, small hail, and possible waterspouts. Marine operators are urged to remain in port or seek shelter as unstable atmospheric conditions increase the potential for localized severe weather.

According to meteorologists, the system will form offshore late Sunday night before moving inland Monday—Columbus Day—bringing widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms. The highest risk area extends from Monterey Bay north through Point Reyes, where lightning activity and strong winds could impact boaters and ferry operations.

Small hail accumulation and brief downpours may also affect coastal highways and nearby communities, leading to slick roads and reduced driving visibility. Waterspouts, while rare, could pose an additional hazard to vessels and shoreline activity.

Forecasters advise residents and mariners to monitor NOAA Weather Radio and local alerts for updated forecasts through Tuesday as the system passes. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by midweek.
