San Francisco, CA – The US National Weather Service in San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey is warning residents of higher-than-normal tides this week due to a Supermoon occurring on Wednesday, November 5.
The Supermoon, when the full moon coincides with the moon’s closest point to Earth, will bring the highest (and lowest) tides of the month. Forecasters say these perigean-spring tides can lead to minor coastal flooding, particularly during high tide cycles in low-lying shoreline areas.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect through 2 p.m. PST Saturday, covering the San Francisco Bay, Monterey Bay, and surrounding coastal communities. Residents near bays, marshes, and tidal creeks are advised to avoid parking in flood-prone areas and to watch for water over roadways during morning high tides.
While skies are expected to be cloudy Wednesday night, likely obscuring views of the Supermoon, the astronomical event will still influence local tide levels. Flooding risk should ease by the weekend as tidal ranges return to normal.
