California weather remains cool and gray across San Diego this afternoon as a thick marine layer stretches inland from the Pacific. Damp sidewalks glistened near downtown and Mission Bay late this morning while low clouds hovered over Interstate 5 and coastal neighborhoods. The cool ocean air kept temperatures near 63 degrees around San Diego International Airport, far below the desert heat building farther inland across the Southwest.

According to the National Weather Service, skies will slowly brighten through the afternoon with temperatures climbing toward 70 degrees. Light northwest winds continue pushing marine moisture inland, helping maintain cloudy mornings and occasional patchy drizzle near the coast through midweek. Areas closer to the beaches may stay noticeably cooler than inland valleys during the afternoon.

Memorial Day keeps the familiar May gray pattern in place with morning clouds followed by gradual afternoon clearing. Temperatures remain mostly in the upper 60s through Thursday across San Diego, Chula Vista and La Jolla. Patchy drizzle may redevelop during early morning hours Tuesday and Wednesday, especially near coastal roadways and elevated hillsides.

Drivers should remain cautious during the morning commute periods. Wet pavement and low clouds may briefly reduce visibility along Interstate 5, Interstate 8 and sections of Highway 101 near the coast. Conditions improve by lunchtime as brighter skies begin breaking through.

The broader western United States stays warm and mainly dry through early next week as high pressure dominates much of the region. However, a Pacific storm system approaching the Northwest later Tuesday may eventually cool portions of the West Coast later in the week while increasing mountain shower chances farther north.

Long-range outlooks continue favoring above-normal temperatures heading into early June, signaling stronger summer warmth likely arriving across Southern California after this prolonged marine-layer stretch.
