California – Waves crash hard against the North Coast this morning as rain falls steadily and gray skies press low over Humboldt Bay. In Eureka, winter weather is making its presence felt along the shoreline, where ocean conditions pose the greatest risk today.
According to the National Weather Service, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect for the Eureka area through late afternoon. Powerful swells and strong currents are impacting beaches, jetties, and rocky headlands. These conditions can sweep people from rocks or beaches without warning, even during breaks in rainfall.
Rain continues early, with temperatures hovering in the low 40s. Wet roads and reduced visibility may slow travel along U.S. Highway 101, especially during heavier showers. Drivers should allow extra time and watch for pooling water in low-lying areas. Winds remain light overall, but the ocean remains hazardous despite calmer conditions inland.
As the day progresses, rain tapers and skies gradually brighten. Tonight turns partly cloudy, with lows dropping into the mid-30s. Cooler air may allow patchy fog to develop late, particularly near the bay and river valleys.
Friday brings a noticeable shift. Sunshine returns, and highs climb into the mid-50s, offering a brief break from the unsettled pattern. The weekend stays mostly dry, though clouds increase Saturday with highs near the upper 50s. Sunday looks brighter again, with sunshine pushing temperatures closer to the upper 50s.
Even as seas slowly calm after the advisory expires, lingering swell may still create dangerous conditions near the coast. Officials urge continued caution around beaches and harbor entrances.
By late January, Eureka gains nearly 40 extra minutes of daylight, a welcome change during winter. Heading out today or near the water this weekend? Let us know what conditions look like where you are.
