Hanford, California – Residents across the Indian Wells Valley and the Mojave Desert in eastern Kern County should avoid prolonged outdoor activity as dangerous heat continues through Monday evening. Afternoon temperatures are expected to climb as high as 112 degrees, while overnight lows will only fall into the mid-70s to lower 80s, offering little opportunity for recovery from the heat.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. PDT Monday for the Indian Wells Valley and the Mojave Desert of eastern Kern County. Forecasters warn of a major risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for people without access to air conditioning, outdoor workers, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions.
Communities including Ridgecrest, Inyokern, China Lake, and surrounding desert areas should expect several consecutive days of extreme heat. Anyone traveling along State Route 178, U.S. Highway 395, or other desert highways should carry extra water, check vehicle cooling systems, and avoid unnecessary travel during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Officials urge residents to remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, drink plenty of water even if they are not thirsty, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and take frequent breaks in the shade if outdoor work cannot be avoided. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The dangerous heat is expected to persist through Monday evening before conditions gradually improve. Additional heat advisories or warning extensions remain possible if the prolonged heat wave continues.
