Hanford, CA – A powerful storm system will bring rain and snow to Central California starting Friday, impacting the Sierra Nevada and Mojave Desert areas. Residents should prepare for heavy precipitation and hazardous travel conditions through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, rainfall in the San Joaquin Valley will range from 1 to 2 inches between Saturday and Sunday. Higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada could see between 2 and 6 inches of snow below 8,000 feet, with up to 3 feet above that level. Snow levels will drop to 6,000 feet by Sunday evening, affecting foothill communities and mountain passes.
Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel in the Sierra Nevada during the storm due to snow-covered roads and low visibility. Those traveling along major routes, including State Route 198 and Highway 99, should remain alert for potential road closures or delays.
The rain will begin late Friday, with showers intensifying on Saturday morning and tapering off Sunday night. The Mojave Desert in Kern County will see lighter rain totals of 0.25 to 0.50 inches. The storm also raises concerns of localized flooding in low-lying areas of the Valley.
Looking ahead, the Hanford forecast predicts calmer weather starting Monday, with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 60s. However, another system could arrive midweek.
