Sacramento, CA – A powerful late-season storm blanketed the Sierra Nevada with more than 40 inches of snow over the last 72 hours, bringing wintry conditions to parts of Northern California typically thawing by April.

Sugar Bowl Resort topped the list with a staggering 44 inches of snowfall between March 31 and April 2, while nearby regions including the Central Sierra Snow Lab and Eagle Lakes recorded 38.6 and 38 inches respectively.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, the totals stem from a slow-moving storm system that swept through the region, delivering both significant snow to the higher elevations and measurable rain to the valleys and foothills. Observed precipitation over the same 72-hour period ranged from 0.25 inches in the Sacramento and Modesto areas to as much as 4–6 inches near Blue Canyon.

Other snow-heavy locations included Soda Springs (35”), Castle Peak (34”), and Bear Valley (32”), with Dodge Ridge rounding out the top ten snowfall sites at 23 inches. The Blue Canyon region also logged 8 inches of snow in the last 24 hours alone.

Forecasters are urging travelers to exercise caution as snow-covered roads and avalanche risks remain elevated across mountain passes. While April snowstorms aren’t entirely uncommon, totals of this magnitude in such a short window are notable, especially as spring begins to take hold in much of California.

Weather officials will continue to monitor the lingering impacts and advise the public to check local travel advisories before venturing into mountainous regions.
