Elmhurst, IL – A California man faces charges after attempting to burglarize a UPS vehicle in Elmhurst on Wednesday morning.
According to Elmhurst police reports, officers responded to a 911 call at the At Home store on South IL Route 83, where a witness reported a masked man attempting to break into a UPS truck. The suspect used screwdrivers to pry open the locked rear package compartment but failed. He fled in a Chrysler minivan with five other men.
Officers located the vehicle on I-88 near York Street and took the men into custody. Investigators discovered the van had a fraudulent license plate and was linked to other suburban UPS thefts.
The suspect, Daniel Fernando Martinez, 43, of Long Beach, California, was charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was released pending a court appearance on September 23, 2024.
Elmhurst Police thanked the alert citizen who recorded the incident, advising others to prioritize safety and call 911 when witnessing criminal activity. Martinez remains innocent until proven guilty. Further charges are pending.
