Grapevine, CA – A minor earthquake measuring 2.7 magnitude was reported early Friday morning near the Grapevine area in Kern County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake occurred at approximately 9:31 p.m. PDT Thursday (4:31 UTC Friday) about 21 kilometers west-northwest of Grapevine, California. The tremor struck at a shallow depth of less than one mile, roughly 0.9 kilometers underground.

The epicenter was located southwest of Bakersfield near the Interstate 5 corridor and Tejon Pass region, an area known for frequent seismic activity due to nearby fault systems in Southern California.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported following the earthquake. The quake was relatively weak, but shallow earthquakes can sometimes be felt more noticeably near the epicenter.

The USGS classified the event as an automatic preliminary report and said additional seismic analysis could slightly revise the magnitude or location.

Residents across portions of Kern County and nearby mountain communities may have experienced brief shaking, particularly in areas near Grapevine, Wheeler Ridge, and the Tejon Pass corridor.

California experiences thousands of earthquakes each year, though the majority are too small to cause damage. Seismologists encourage residents to maintain earthquake preparedness kits and review emergency plans, especially in earthquake-prone regions across the state.

Additional aftershocks are possible but are not expected to be significant based on the quake’s current magnitude.
