Coachella, CA – Residents of the Coachella Valley are under an air quality alert as windblown dust is causing harmful particle pollution, posing health risks through Tuesday morning.
According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), the alert is in effect from 11 a.m. Monday until 11 a.m. Tuesday. Areas impacted include Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, and Coachella. The windblown dust is expected to increase airborne particle pollution, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause serious health complications.
Individuals with lung or heart disease, older adults, pregnant people, children, and those who spend extended periods outdoors are particularly vulnerable. The AQMD warns that when the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (orange), those affected should limit outdoor activity. If levels reach “Unhealthy” (red) or higher, outdoor activity should be minimized for all individuals, with sensitive groups advised to remain indoors.
To reduce exposure, residents are urged to keep windows and doors closed, use air purifiers, and avoid activities that contribute to indoor pollution, such as burning candles or using gas-powered equipment. For updated air quality forecasts, visit www.aqmd.gov or download the AQMD mobile app.
