Sacramento, CA – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to the Sierra Nevada, with travel conditions expected to remain hazardous through late Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. PDT for elevations above 4,500 feet. Areas impacted include Western Plumas County, Lassen Park, and the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada. Snow accumulations are expected to range from 6 to 12 inches in Lassen Park, with 1 to 2 feet possible above 5,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada. Wind gusts could reach up to 50 mph, creating dangerous whiteout conditions.
Snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are possible in the heaviest bands, especially early Monday morning. Snow levels are expected to drop to 3,500 feet overnight, with light accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible at lower elevations.
Travelers should anticipate slippery and snow-covered roads, particularly on major mountain passes. Caltrans advises motorists to check road conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or dial 511 before traveling. Those who must drive are urged to carry a winter storm kit, including extra food, water, and blankets, in case of unexpected delays or road closures.
Officials recommend postponing travel plans if possible and using extreme caution when driving in affected areas. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, increasing the risk of power outages.
