Palm Springs, Calif. – Dangerous air quality levels are gripping the Coachella Valley through early Wednesday as windblown dust sends particle pollution into the “unhealthy” range, prompting warnings for residents across the region.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the alert is in effect from 7 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Wednesday, with elevated PM10 levels — tiny dust particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs — posing a serious risk to sensitive groups and outdoor workers. The warning covers Palm Springs, Indio, La Quinta, and surrounding areas near the San Gorgonio Pass.

Officials urge people with asthma, heart or lung disease, young children, older adults, and anyone spending extended time outdoors to limit activity, especially when the Air Quality Index reaches red or purple levels. In some areas, particle levels may spike quickly depending on wind gusts and local conditions.

To protect indoor air, residents are advised to keep windows closed, use air conditioning or purifiers, and avoid burning candles or grilling. Those driving on unpaved roads are encouraged to slow down or avoid travel to reduce additional dust in the air.

The AQMD said conditions may improve by Wednesday morning, but residents should monitor local AQI readings and take precautions as needed.
