Burlington, VT – The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a Winter Storm Watch for central and southern Vermont from 7 a.m. Tuesday through 1 a.m. Wednesday, with the potential for 7 inches or more of snowfall across the region.

Forecasters say the heaviest snow is expected during the day Tuesday, with rates potentially exceeding 1 inch per hour at times, leading to hazardous travel and reduced visibility below 1 mile. The greatest snow accumulations are projected south of Burlington—across Rutland, Montpelier, and Springfield—while lighter amounts are expected closer to the Canadian border.

Snow is forecast to begin Tuesday morning and intensify through the afternoon, impacting both the morning and evening commutes. Road conditions will deteriorate quickly as temperatures remain below freezing, allowing snow to accumulate efficiently on untreated surfaces.

Motorists should prepare for slick, snow-covered roads and allow extra time for travel. The NWS advises keeping an emergency kit in vehicles and staying tuned for upgraded warnings as the system approaches.

By early Wednesday, snowfall will taper off, but cold conditions will persist midweek, keeping roads icy in some areas.
