Burlington, Vt. – Residents across northern New York and much of northwestern Vermont should prepare for a widespread frost early Thursday, with a frost advisory in effect from 12 a.m. until 8 a.m. Overnight lows are expected to fall near or just below freezing, posing a threat to late-season crops and unprotected outdoor plants.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the advisory includes Clinton, Essex, and southwestern St. Lawrence counties in New York, along with Franklin, Chittenden, and Addison counties in Vermont. Cities at risk include Plattsburgh, Burlington, St. Albans, Middlebury, and Vergennes. The coldest air will settle in sheltered valleys and rural areas, where frost is most likely to form before sunrise.

Gardeners and farmers are urged to cover tender plants or bring them inside ahead of the temperature drop. The cold snap may also create slick spots in rural areas where frost develops on bridges and overpasses before the morning commute.

The advisory is scheduled to end at 8 a.m. Thursday, though similar conditions are possible in the coming days as cool, clear nights continue across the Champlain Valley and northern Adirondacks.
