Buffalo, NY – A fast-moving snow squall is creating dangerous travel conditions across western New York, with whiteout conditions and wind gusts exceeding 50 mph. The National Weather Service in Buffalo issued a snow squall warning effective until 2:30 a.m. Friday.

According to the NWS, the squall was detected at 1:24 a.m., stretching from Lakeside Beach State Park to 26 miles southwest of Niagara Falls, moving east at 30 mph. Areas impacted include Buffalo, Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda, Lockport, and Batavia.

Travel will be extremely hazardous, particularly along Interstate 90 between exits 48 and 57A and the entire length of Interstate 190. Sudden drops in visibility and rapidly accumulating snow could cause accidents, and strong winds may down tree limbs or blow unsecured objects.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel if possible. Those already on the road should slow down, increase following distances, and be prepared for sudden whiteout conditions.
