Buffalo, New York – An arctic air mass is expected to move into western New York late Friday, bringing dangerous wind chills and accumulating snow through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service office in Buffalo, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect for the region as temperatures fall sharply behind a strong cold front Friday night. Wind chills are expected to drop into the teens and 20s below zero, with some locations potentially reaching near -25 degrees. The coldest conditions are forecast overnight into Saturday morning and again Saturday night into early Sunday.
In addition to the extreme cold, widespread light to moderate snowfall is expected Friday and Friday night. Snowfall amounts are forecast to remain generally light, but gusty winds combined with dry, fluffy snow may significantly reduce visibility at times. Snowfall rates are expected to stay below one-half inch per hour, though brief bursts of heavier snow are possible.
Travel impacts are expected along major corridors including Interstate 90, Interstate 190, U.S. Route 219, Route 33, and Route 400. Blowing snow and rapidly falling temperatures may create hazardous conditions, especially overnight and during early morning travel periods.
The National Weather Service warned that wind chills will fall rapidly Friday night as the cold front passes. Frostbite on exposed skin may occur in as little as 15 to 30 minutes under the coldest conditions. Even after some moderation early next week, temperatures and wind chills are expected to remain well below normal.
Residents are urged to prepare now by limiting outdoor exposure, wearing layered winter clothing, and ensuring pets and vulnerable individuals are protected from the cold. Motorists should carry winter emergency kits in case of breakdowns.
Students, commuters, and young workers traveling late Friday night or early Saturday may face the most dangerous conditions. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases.
