Greenfield, IN – A fatal crash occurred on Monday morning at the intersection of US40 and County Road 800E in Hancock County, resulting in the death of a Markleville man. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene around 8:00 a.m. after reports of a severe collision involving a 2011 Ford Edge and a 1996 Peterbilt dump truck.

The Ford Edge, driven by Matthew Fisher, 48, was traveling eastbound on US40 when it rear-ended the Peterbilt, which was being driven by Kenneth Stautamoyer, 48, of Daleville. The impact caused the Peterbilt to overturn, partially blocking the westbound lanes of US40. Fisher was pronounced dead at the scene, having sustained fatal injuries in the collision. The Peterbilt’s driver was unharmed.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, visibility issues due to bright sun glare may have contributed to the crash. Witnesses reported that the Peterbilt’s turn signal was activated as it approached the intersection. The Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is investigating the incident, with assistance from Greenfield Police and local fire departments.

Authorities urge drivers to exercise caution, especially during sunrise and sunset when visibility can be significantly reduced.
