Goodland, KS – Dangerous and potentially life-threatening travel conditions are unfolding tonight across parts of eastern Colorado, western and northwest Kansas, and southwest Nebraska as blowing dust and extreme winds impact the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Blowing Dust Warning remains in effect until 2 a.m. MST / 3 a.m. CST Thursday, while a High Wind Warning continues until 5 p.m. MST / 6 p.m. CST Thursday.

Counties impacted include Cheyenne County in Colorado, Rawlins, Decatur, Thomas, Sheridan, Wallace, Logan, Gove, Greeley, and Wichita counties in Kansas, and Hitchcock and Red Willow counties in Nebraska.

Forecasters report widespread blowing dust and brownout conditions, with visibility expected to drop to near zero at times. Northwest winds of 30 to 50 mph, with gusts as high as 80 mph, are contributing to rapidly changing conditions along highways and rural roads.

Officials warn that travel during dust plumes can become extremely dangerous within seconds, as visibility may change drastically over short distances. High-profile vehicles are especially at risk, and strong winds may move debris, damage property, and cause power outages.

In addition to travel hazards, poor air quality is a major concern. Blowing dust can aggravate asthma, respiratory illnesses, and heart conditions, particularly for children, older adults, and those with pre-existing health issues.

Drivers who encounter blowing dust are urged to remember: “Pull Aside, Stay Alive.” Pull off the roadway as far as possible, turn off all vehicle lights, place the car in park, and keep your foot off the brake to avoid rear-end collisions.

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors if possible, secure loose outdoor objects, and monitor local alerts as conditions remain hazardous into Thursday.
