Bethel, AK – A powerful winter system is expected to sweep across the Kuskokwim Delta Coast beginning Thursday morning, bringing dangerous blizzard conditions and travel disruptions through Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, a Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for the region—including communities such as Kipnuk, Toksook Bay, Quinhagak, and Nunivak Island—from 10 a.m. Thursday until 1 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters anticipate total snow accumulations between 4 to 6 inches, with wind gusts potentially reaching 40 mph. Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less at times due to blowing snow.
Travel could become extremely difficult across coastal villages, particularly in open areas with little protection from high winds. Whiteout conditions are possible, increasing the risk for those on snowmachines or driving between communities.
Residents are urged to limit travel during peak storm periods and to secure outdoor items ahead of high winds. Emergency kits, extra fuel, and backup communication plans are strongly advised for remote households.
While snowfalls of this magnitude are not uncommon in early April, the combination of strong gusts and reduced visibility marks this system as a significant regional hazard. Updates will be provided as conditions develop.
