Minneapolis, MN – A powerful winter storm is set to bring blizzard conditions to western Minnesota on Saturday, with heavy snow, high winds, and dangerously low visibility expected throughout the day. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for multiple counties, including Douglas, Stevens, Pope, Lac Qui Parle, Swift, Chippewa, and Yellow Medicine, effective from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT Saturday. Todd County remains under a Winter Storm Warning.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, the storm will begin as rain and thunderstorms Friday evening before transitioning into a wintry mix overnight. By early Saturday morning, the system will bring snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, along with gusty northwest winds reaching up to 60 mph. Total snowfall accumulations between 4 to 8 inches are expected, with additional sleet and ice accumulations making roads even more hazardous.
Whiteout conditions will make travel extremely dangerous, and officials are urging residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Strong winds could also lead to power outages and damage to trees and power lines.
Drivers are advised to carry a winter survival kit and check 511mn.org for the latest road conditions. If stranded, authorities recommend staying inside your vehicle for safety.
