Portland, ME – Residents across Maine and much of northern New England should prepare for significant snowfall and hazardous travel conditions starting Wednesday afternoon. A Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect until early Friday, with snow accumulations of up to 8 inches expected in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin this afternoon and intensify through Thursday. Northern regions, including areas near Augusta and Bangor, could see heavier totals, while coastal areas might experience a wintry mix. Winds gusting up to 40 mph will create blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility and making travel on major roadways like I-95 hazardous.

Blizzard-like conditions may develop in higher elevations and open areas, with whiteouts possible during peak snowfall periods. Commuters should plan for slower travel and slippery roads, particularly during Thursday’s morning and evening rush hours.

The five-day forecast indicates lingering flurries and colder temperatures into the weekend, with highs in the 30s and overnight lows in the teens. Ice patches may persist on untreated roads and sidewalks.

Residents are advised to clear snow promptly to avoid icing and prepare for potential power outages in areas where wind impacts tree lines. Officials recommend dialing 511 for the latest road conditions and staying updated through NOAA Weather Radio or local media.
